Guide to Play

Changeover Alert at No. 10!

As pairings are reconfigured after the front nine, we need to avoid a massive backup. Every player needs to advance quickly to No. 10 tee once his front nine match ends. The first group off No. 10 must proceed ASAP – we’ll send the straggler forward!

Scrambles

Lies can be improved within one club length no closer to the hole without moving from rough to fairway, fringe to green, etc. Team Scrambles must use minimum of 1 tee shot from each player; 2-Man Scramble must use minimum of 3 tee shots from each player.

Modified Alternating Shot

Team Scrambles must use minimum of 1 tee shot from each player; 2- Man Scramble must use minimum of 3 tee shots from each player. Lies can be improved within one club length no closer to the hole without moving from rough to fairway, fringe to green, etc.

Both players hit tee shots. Players select one tee shot and alternate shots from there. Must use minimum of 3 tee shots from each player.

Dead Possum Point

A BRRC treasure, the Dead Possum Point brings all golfers together at the end of Friday in a single 9-hole match worth one point. The format is alternating shot, with two players from each team assigned to each hole and each player involved in two of the first eight holes. Captains announce those assignments Thursday night. The pairing for No. 18 is determined by captains upon arriving at that tee.

Legends vs. Legends Matches

For best-ball matches consisting exclusively of Legends players, players can opt by consensus for a two-man scramble instead.

Fast Play and Rules Adjustments

The BRRC stresses the principle of “hit-when-ready” and employs two rules changes to keep play moving quickly: (1) if a ball is lost or hit out of bounds, the player can hit his next shot from the spot where it was lost or went out of bounds with only a 1 stroke penalty versus the stroke-and- distance rule normally applied; (2) a ball in your own fairway can be moved one club length no closer to the hole (balls in the rough cannot be touched unless plugged or in casual water).

Flags

Solid white flag is flown when match is Tied, solid red or blue flag shows a side 1 Up (Redmen are red, Mulligans blue), and striped-red/striped-blue flag shows a side 2 Up or more.

Course Adjustments

For No. 9, the shed’s weathervane marks out-of-bounds for over-the-lake drives. We have adjusted the handicap ratings for certain holes.

Awards

Each member of the tournament’s winning team receives a goblet with elaborate engraving, while members of the losing team each receive a smaller cordial cup with minimal engraving. A unique cordial cup is awarded to the player selected as the year’s most valuable player. The player’s growing forest of pewter vessels can be displayed on an engraved pewter tray which the player receives in his second year of BRRC competition. In addition, members of the winning team are beribboned upon their arrival at the awards banquet. Players also receive a “Mumms and Mums” award for birdies shot during the competition. Named for the original practice of bestowing a bottle of G.H. Mumm & Cie. champagne and a pot of chrysanthemums for each birdie, the award was subsequently curtailed to a bottle of champagne for one or more birdies/eagles together with handsome paper tags of indeterminable value identifying each one. A hole-in-one earns the cash equivalent of a case of cheap champagne financed by passing the hat.
